The game requires basic knowledge of mechanics and how to build and play a Player Character beforehand in order to get the best experience out of play.
A "standard" D&D session varies, and can take anywhere from 90 minutes to several hours. A 3 hour session for example may have a lot of detail going on, be it conversation or combat, and not progress the overall story as much as expected.
D&D 5e can certainly be accomplished with 1-2 players, but the recommended "sweet spot" for gameplay usually hovers around 3-5.
6-7 players is possible, but is not recommended if a group is looking for fast-paced sessions.
8 or more players are heavily discouraged.
For inspiration, recommended watches include Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, The Legend of Vox Machina, The Princess Bride, and Dreamworks' The Road to El Dorado.
